Playtime Co. is a toy manufacturing company featured in the indie horror game Poppy Playtime. It is the primary location where the game takes place, until "The Hour of Joy" (a massacre caused by and known to the toys) led to its closure. It was likely established in the 1950s.
The Playtime Co. factory is the main setting of the games, located in an unspecified location in the American Midwest. It was founded in 1930 with the goal of entertaining children all over the world, becoming the most famous and recognized toy company of its era.
They created hundreds of toys over many years, some of which achieved great popularity. Of all the toys created by Playtime Co., Huggy Wuggy, created in 1984, was the most popular and memorable. Around 1950, Playtime Co. began offering guided tours of the factory for $2.99 per visitor.
Out of public sight, Playtime Co. experimented with its toys, ultimately attempting to revive a dead rat with poppy flowers. Although the experiment failed, the project director believed that something bigger than a rat would yield better results. This conclusion later contributed to the founding of the Bigger Bodies Initiative. As revealed in various documents, the orphans that Playtime Co. adopted would be biologically transformed into the toys. Marie Payne, for example, is Mommy Long Legs.
Following the implementation of the Bigger Bodies Initiative, Playtime Co. leveraged the toys, granting them various tasks, such as Huggy Wuggy, who worked as the factory's security guard, and Mommy Long Legs, who helped children at the Game Station. This helped Playtime Co. increase the efficiency of its workforce without the need for human workers who demanded pay, breaks, and complained.
Although Playtime Co. is based in the United States, the company is shown to be international, as seen in Chapter 2, where a box with Russian letters is shown. In RESTRICTED relocation 08-08-1995.mp4, German and Russian letters are shown instructing the viewer to stop watching the video. These two appearances in different languages could indicate that Playtime Co. owned facilities in other countries or was supplied by international companies (especially from Russia and Germany). Furthermore, Playtime Co. seemed to hire staff from different countries: Marcas Brickley is presumably from Ireland, Harley Sawyer and Eddie MN Ritterman are presumably from England, and Stella Greyber is presumably from the Netherlands.
Although appearing as a highly successful corporation creating toys and happiness for children worldwide, every chapter and ARG proves that Playtime Co. was actually the complete opposite of its reputation. Riddled with internal problems, the company constantly treated its employees and workers horribly, constantly supervising their work and even forbidding them from socializing unless necessary. It is implied that the company paid little attention to factory infrastructure, as seen not only in the game (the massive open space leading to Poppy's Room only has railings to walk on) but also in the Chapter 4 intro, where it is hinted that Jack Ayers' fall into the dough machine was due to a faulty railing; something that could have been easily fixed. There are many more issues detailed below:
As Harley Sawyer mentions in the Warden's Office tape from 8/8/1995, a major problem Playtime Co. suffered from was the personal agenda of the executives. Ironically, Sawyer is the clearest example of this, as after using the Bigger Bodies Initiative to secure higher profits and lower labor costs, he deviated from the project's original goal and seemingly used it as an excuse to experiment with immortality. Furthermore, it is hinted that Leith Pierre only invested in the initiative for financial reasons rather than its real goals, as Sawyer noted that his successful creation of the Bigger Body Boxy Boo would appease "Leith and his money men." In the same tape, he hints that personal agendas were what contributed to the Hour of Joy, given that only the highest-ranking executives (the Warden, Eddie, Stella, and Leith) had executive access to security mechanisms.
Playtime Co. was also obsessed with maintaining confidentiality among its employees to ridiculous levels, to the point where they were discouraged from speaking to one another. The company claimed this rule was to secure the company, which was obviously an excuse to hide the Bigger Bodies Initiative. PW states in the Orientation Notebook that he was forced to sign multiple NDAs regarding Poppy Playtime, despite not even knowing how it worked, and had an encounter with an employee who told him the doll technology was simpler than he assumed but refused to reveal more. On page 55 of the notebook, the author wrote that employees were prohibited from discussing events happening in the factory with anyone. It is worth mentioning this phrase: "If you thought you saw something strange or disturbing... it is important to remember that no, you did not."
Playtime Co. also had no qualms about murdering its employees and workers to hide its secrets or if they were a burden, as seen with Rowan Stoll. In 1991, he discovered Playtime Co.'s secrets. In response, the company sabotaged Rowan's car, which nearly caused his death, and afterwards, Boxy Boo ate him alive; the latter was Playtime Co.'s main method for murdering problematic employees. A similar case was also theorized for the fate of Marcas Brickley. Most cruelly, Play
