The story begins with Tang San, an outer disciple of the Tang Sect. Accused of stealing forbidden inner sect techniques, he jumps off a cliff intending to prove his resolve, only to unexpectedly transmigrate to the "Douluo Continent" – a fantasy world centered around Martial Souls.
Here, children awaken their Martial Souls at age six, with innate soul power determining their cultivation talent. Tang San is reborn as the son of blacksmith Tang Hao. At six, he awakens twin souls: the Blue Silver Grass, considered a weak martial soul, and the mysterious Haotian Hammer, along with innate full soul power.
At Nuoding Academy, he becomes the disciple of Grandmaster Yu Xiaogang and meets Xiao Wu, a ten-thousand-year soul beast who has taken human form. They become siblings. Later, with Dai Mubai, Oscar, and others, they form the "Shrek Seven Devils." Relying on teamwork and astonishing talent, they win the Continental Advanced Spirit Masters' Elite Tournament. However, Xiao Wu's identity as a soul beast is exposed, leading to pursuit by the Spirit Hall. Tang Hao appears to save them; Xiao Wu sacrifices her soul rings to protect Tang San, who vows revenge.
Subsequently, Tang San trains in the Slaughter City and gains the domain of Killer God. He returns to the Haotian Sect to reconnect with his ancestry and integrates the Tang Sect with the four great clans. The Spirit Hall evolves into the Spirit Empire and declares war on the two empires.
The Shrek Seven Devils travel to Sea God Island for training. Tang San completes the Nine Trials of Sea God and inherits the position of Sea God. In the decisive battle at Jialing Pass, Tang San is initially killed by Bibi Dong but is resurrected as the Asura God. Together with Xiao Wu, they unleash "Dual God Coexistence," defeating Bibi Dong and Qian Renxue, ending the Spirit Empire's ambitions, and bringing peace to the Douluo Continent.
Tang San: The protagonist. In his past life, he was a genius of the Tang Sect. Reborn, he possesses both the Tang Sect's hidden weapon skills and twin souls. He is steady, resilient, loyal, and values relationships. He grows from a youth in Nuoding City to a holder of dual god positions, Sea God and Asura God. He is the core of the Shrek Seven Devils and a key force against the Spirit Hall.
Xiao Wu: A ten-thousand-year Soft Bone Rabbit soul beast who took human form. Tang San's beloved and soulmate. She appears lively and spirited but is inwardly fierce and deeply affectionate. She willingly sacrifices herself to save Tang San and is resurrected after he achieves godhood. Her soul beast identity is a crucial foreshadowing that drives the plot, and her bond with Tang San runs through the entire story.
Yu Xiaogang: Known as "Grandmaster." A researcher of Martial Soul theory. Exiled by his family due to his mutated martial soul, he possesses top-tier soul master knowledge. He takes Tang San as a disciple, outlining his cultivation path. He is the foundational mentor for the Shrek Seven Devils, using his wisdom to compensate for their lack of soul power. He is renowned for the saying, "There are no useless martial souls, only useless soul masters."
Tang Hao: Tang San's father, the previous generation's Haotian Douluo. After his lover, Ah Yin (a ten-thousand-year Blue Silver Emperor), sacrificed herself, he fell into despair for many years. When Tang San faces danger, he regains his fighting spirit, using the might of the Haotian Hammer to intimidate the Spirit Hall. Later, he guides Tang San's cultivation, acting as a key elder who influences Tang San's growth. He bears the past and responsibilities of the Haotian Sect.
Bibi Dong: The Pope of the Spirit Hall. Possessor of twin souls (Death Spider Emperor, Soul Devouring Spider Emperor). Driven to extremism by past betrayals, she seeks to unify the continent. She is Tang San's primary antagonist. Though powerful, her heart is twisted. She is ultimately defeated by the combined efforts of Tang San and Xiao Wu in the decisive battle at Jialing Pass. Her tragic fate reflects the cost of power and hatred.
While watching this anime, I disliked Tang San, feeling he relied too much on plot armor. Without protagonist halo, he would have died long ago. Then, I transmigrated and became the daughter of the Spirit Hall's Great Enshrined one. My talent is extremely high; by 18, I'm already a Titled Douluo. This is a world where men can get pregnant and give birth, where men have 'little channels' and women have penises.
