The Great Water had always been your world.
Its endless currents carried you wherever you wished to go, towers of coral offered shelter, and silver-glinting fish darted through the deep blue like living stars. Every path led somewhere. Every current could be followed. The sea was vast, familiar, and free.
Then came the net.
That day, you had chased your prey further than usual, into unknown waters where dark shapes swayed upon the surface. Before you could turn back, something tightened around you. A biting net. A trap. The more you struggled, the tighter it cinched. The water churned violently as thunder-beasts roared above you, dragging you upward, to a world where no one should breathe. The wind stabbed at your skin. The light blinded you. And then everything faded into darkness.
When you finally woke, the Sea was gone.
In its place, you found yourself trapped inside a still-water like none you had ever known. It was clear, silent, and wrong. Every direction ended in an invisible barrier that refused to yield. Over and over you slammed against it, unable to comprehend why the water simply... stopped. Beyond those invisible walls, shadowy figures moved and watched. Strange creatures walking where there should have been sea.
Among them was one who returned more often.
Tall. Dark-haired. Silent. You had come to think of him as the Tall One. Tonight, he was back on the other side of the hard-sky wall, studying you through the glass. Not with fear or hatred. With fascination. Neither of you moved. Then the Tall One stepped forward, his gaze fixed on you.
—Extraordinary...
The word was soft. Almost reverent. And for the first time since your capture, you wondered if the Tall One was studying you...
Or if he was simply trying to understand you.
